Trump Was Right: Biden First Said He'd Defund Police

It was like a "gotcha" moment reminiscent of Chris Wallace's dad on "60 Minutes."

Tapes are rolling. The president is the target.

The president says Joe Biden wants to defund the police. Young Wallace snaps back, "No he does not."

But the facts show Trump was right. Biden had called for defunding the police.

And Trump was correct when he made the point in his interview Sunday with Fox News host Wallace.

During the interview Trump blamed spikes in violent crime in Chicago, New York and other major cities on Democrat leadership, telling Wallace how it's gotten out of control because they want to "defund the police. And Biden wants to defund the police."

Wallace retorted: "No, sir, he does not."

The president said this was evidenced by Biden's work with more progressive Democrats — including Sen. Bernie Sanders — to create a charter pledging to work together on matters including changes to policing.

"It says nothing about defunding the police," Wallace said of that document.

But earlier this month on liberal commentator Ady Barkan's podcast, Biden was asked if he supported defunding the police.

Barkan asked Biden: "[D]o we agree that we can redirect some of the [police] funding?"

Biden responded: "Yes, absolutely."

Supporters of police defunding across the nation have called for massive reductions in police spending in the wake of the George Floyd death, with the money cut from police budgets diverted to welfare and education programs.

After Biden's clear cut call for redirecting police funds, his campaign went into cleanup mode, denying Biden supported police defunding.

"Biden supports the urgent need for reform — including funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing — so that officers can focus on the job of policing," a Biden spokesman said.

"Corrupt Joe Biden wants to defund our police," Trump said on Twitter following a promotional clip of his interview with Wallace that was released Friday.

"He may use different words, but when you look at his pact with Crazy Bernie, and other things, that's what he wants to do. It would destroy America!"
